This morning I went for my ‘weighted-down’ training walk as usual, only this time the pack was heavier and I extended the distance by about a kilometre up the mountain track. I also pushed myself fairly hard and for the first time in years I experienced the burning sensation in my quadriceps, which usually signals the onset of lactic acid build-up. This used to be common in my cycling days. But of course, this is often accompanied by the release of endomorphines, which probably explained why I felt so good on my way back down. It probably also explains why I could hardly keep my eyes open a few hours later!

But it feels good to be getting fit again …
