Chris de Villiers (‘Ranger48’) is a semi-retired electronics engineer who moved away from the city in 2008 to a farm near a small town called Vanrhynsdorp, in the Western Cape, South Africa, about 350 km north of Cape Town. He earns a meagre income as a consultant, designing and developing electronic equipment. He lives alone, mostly, with his two Bull Terriers, Thulu and Tessie, but sees his wife, Lana, who is a teacher, on weekends. His interests include nature and the outdoors, hiking, photography, astronomy, writing, computers and just about anything to do with science and technology.
Chris developed a love for maps, adventure and the outdoors while he was in the army in 1968. In later years he hiked in many parts of South Africa, mostly alone, so that planning and executing solo adventures have become the norm. He has also undertaken a number of solo mountain bike tours, one of which was to the Richtersveld mountain desert in 1993.
